Staying Healthy This Cold & Flu Season

Staying healthy is a common concern for everyone especially as we approach Winter, AKA cold and flu season. According to the CDC, the flu and the virus that causes COVID-19 are likely to spread throughout Fall and Winter, so it’s important to know how to avoid them. Here are a few simple steps to keep you and your family healthy this season:

1. Wash Your Hands

This tip does not just apply to cold and flu season, it is one to hold onto all year round! Frequently washing your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds is imperative to avoiding any viruses this season. Always wash before touching your face or eating, after interacting with any item in public areas such as door handles or groceries at the store, and after being in contact with anything that could potentially be home to a virus.

Bonus: Keep a travel size hand sanitizer in your bag, car and at your desk so that you’re prepared in the instances that you can’t wash at a sink.

2. Eat A Balanced Diet & Move Your Body

Besides providing you loads of energy and improved sleep, diet and exercise plays a large role in your chances of avoiding the flu and COVID-19. By eating a nutrient-dense diet and moving your body for at least 30 minutes a day you can strengthen your immune system which fights off viruses for you. 

Bonus: Up your vitamin C levels with a supplement or some citrus to especially fight off viruses and bacteria.

3. Get Vaccinated & Tested

While there is no vaccine available to the public for COVID-19 at the moment, flu shots are still available and even free (with insurance) at places like Walgreens or CVS. Getting tested for COVID-19 should also be on your radar, so that you are aware of your status and can prevent the spread to others. 

Bonus: Testing is free for residents of Los Angeles County and can take as little as 5 minutes, make it part of your weekly schedule to get tested.

4. Wear A Mask

The flu and the virus that causes COVID-19 are considered airborne illnesses, meaning they are spread through droplets dispersed into the air via coughing, sneezing and breathing. By wearing a mask, you can protect yourself from these viruses and prevent the spread of them to others.

Bonus: Keep a mask in your bag, home and car -- maybe even a box to share with others, so that you are never without protection.
